How to upgrade WordPress in under 7 minutes using CPanel
Inspired by 5xmom to create this video as she blogged about hitting snags in upgrading her WordPress blogs. Can’t argue with a person who has 20+ WordPress blogs. Anyway, this is a personal preference of mine and I must say there is no best method. I prefer to upgrade WordPress by using CPanel. I do this by
- uploading the entire zip file to my website,
- unzip it to overwrite the old files
- use CPanel to copy all the files in the unzipped folder to your WordPress folder
- and… and that’s it! Wordpress upgraded.
Of course you should backup your whole folder and database first before attempting this.
Forgive my nervousness and repeated use of “Now .. what I’m going to is..”. This is only the second video I’ve done so far
PS:
I like to live life dangerously. You noticed I didn’t go thru the time consuming step of turning off all the plugins and reactivating them one by one as recommended after the upgrade. I just overwrote everything. Not recommended to those who have more serious and important blogs.

I upgraded my WordPress in less than 2 minutes anyway. It doesn’t take you that long to upgrade. Plus I have over 50 plugins on my blog. I’ve written some detailed stuff about WordPress on my blog. Nothing that hasn’t been blogged to death, but a hint to how WordPress should be updated.

Wow!! That’s super fast. SSH right ?
I don’t think I even have 10 plugins. Doesn’t 50 plugins slow WordPress down?
I just read your blog and you recommend using FTPupload. For me that’s not an option because of the shitty connection I have with Streamyx. The connection breaks off every few minutes and FileZilla will try to reupload. Problem is that some file will be uploaded incorrectly or corrupted. I end up having White Screen of Death (blank screen) because of some PHP error - which cannot be detected easily (because of the White Screen).
Hence, CPanel seems to be the best method for me so far.

Your 7 min doesn’t even include time for doing the Database backup and the Wordpress files backup which are totally essential as part of the upgrade process…

Yes you are right. Like I said .. living dangerously.
But seriously if something did go wrong I’ll just go back to my webhost asking them to restore back my database one day back. They do daily backups. At least that’s what they say anyway
Anyway, thanks for your comment. I am going to actually do a complete back up now of the db as well as the entire blog folder.

LOL, my webhost is sweating after he heard I learnt this method from you. Cos I am very clumsy with cpanel files there. I better stick to my filezilla where I know the folders arrangements better. sked…

ya as long as your FTP connection is not as problematic as mine then it’s ok la. I understand how easy it is to get confuse with folder locations with so many blogs.
