Notebook on Standby or Hibernate?
After my seeing my Dell 640m notebook dying after only 14 months, I come to the conclusion that leaving the computer on hibernate is not good for the battery. I’ve been doing that almost everytime before I go to sleep instead of turning the notebook off.
So to answer the question above I think it’s better to turn off the notebook completely. A friend of mine goes one step further - he pulls out the battery when not in use or when he is on mains. I suspect 5xmom’s Sony Viao dead battery is cause by hibernating to often too.
Note: Standby mode is even worse, because it uses battery power to maintain the contents of memory.
PS: Now my Dell notebook battery can only last 45 minutes with WiFi turn on.

I always pull out my Acer battery when it’s connected to the electric. Only use battery when I go out to cafe kind of place. And the battery is still so far so good after 3 years. Still can use up to 3 hours like before.

The reason why batteries die very fast is because most people leave the batteries IN while the notebook charges. Once the battery is full, it will still cycle through charging and discharging power. Given this on a constant basis, this lowers battery life.
So always remove your battery if you plan to have it plugged while using it, especially if your battery is full. It increases the battery life span.
Standby discharges the battery yes, but it doesn’t lower the lifespan. What it DOES do is lower the lifespan of the hard disk drive especially if you move it around while in standby mode.
Hibernate doesn’t do much except for decrease the speed of your system and take up a lot of space (especially if you have more RAM). Not recommended anyway because more often than not, you boot up faster and have a better system by doing a hard boot rather than hibernating.

Kat & Edrei: I am now convinced that’s my mistake. I’m starting to make it a habit to pull out the battery every time I’m on main power. Too late though for my dying battery. But good to pick up this habit to prolong the life of my future battery.
