10 minutes upgrade to Wordpress 2.3.3
Lately I have been getting fat and lazy so I took this as a challenge. Upgrade my ‘old’ Wordpress 2.3 to Wordpress 2.3.3 in 10 minutes. Don’t you feel that they are always updating and patching something?
Fed up of seeing this message..
Anyway, I managed to do the upgrade just under 10 minutes including taking the screenshots of the main steps. I am so happy !! (but I’m still fat and lazy
)
Read on if you are interested.
Summary
1. Download the latest WordPress
2. Upload the entire zip file to your website root.
3. Unzip the Wordpress zip file into a temporary folder
4. Move all the files and overwrite your older WordPress version folder.
Requirements
I assume that you have CPanel in your webhosting services. Most people have this anyway, and if you don’t so sorry but the method is applicable to other admin dashboard too that has a file manager with unarchive or unzip feature. Even my cheapo GoDaddy hosting has this feature (they call it unarchive).
Detailed Steps
First go to Wordpress to download the latest version. You can find it here.
Logon to your CPanel. If you have this feature, it’s usually at www.yourdomain.com/cpanel/
Click the File Manager icon.

In File Manager, click on the Upload icon.

Browse and choose your WordPress Zip file. In this case mine is in my C:\downloads, file name: wordpress-2.3.3.zip
Go back to your File Manager and select the file you just uploaded. The upload is pretty fast. Mine took slightly more than a minute. This is a big advantage over uploading each and every file via FTP.
Click on the Extract icon in your File Manager.
Choose the path to extract to. For me, I chose to install it to the Web root folder, ie /public_html

You will see a popup showing you all the files extracted.

Use the File Manager and go to the new “Wordpress” that has been created (/public_html/wordpress/). Double click the folder icon to go in.
Select all the file by clicking on the following icon.
All the files and folders should be ticked as such:

Then, click the Move File icon

For me, my installed wordpress is in /public_html/andrewooi so I chose that as my destination. Yours may be different.
That’s it!!
This is the message you want to see at your WordPress dashboard footer.

Well I did try that but it really messed up my previous installed Wordpress. I prefer manually updating it like this.
