Experimenting with Cheap hosting
Sometimes cheap doesn’t mean low quality. I’ve been very happy with GoDaddy’s domain hosting as I’ve bought many domain names from this company. Now I’m curious to see how good is their web hosting service. I’ve never tried that before with all my website hosted on Exabytes.
So, today I registered a chess related domain (ChessAsia.net) as well as signed up for a 2 months webhosting solution. Total cost: USD 9.37.
That’s pretty cheap. The dot Net domain itself was only USD 2.19 !!
Using a useful Google search shortcut tip I learnt from JennyHow, that’s just about RM 30.
So I have the domain for one year and webhosting for a trial 2 months. The budget webhosting has all the basic stuff I need for a dynamic website such as PHP and MySQL. I’ll probably just install WordPress for the website.
I’ll report on how good (or bad) GoDaddy’s service is (or isn’t) over the next few weeks.
If the webhosting is not up to par, it’s a simple procedure to transfer webhosting to my Exabytes account. I’ve done that before.
Webhosting features are as follows:
• 5 GB Space
• 250 GB Transfer
• 500 Email Accounts
• FREE! Software
• 10 MySQL Databases
• 50 Email Forwards
• Forums, Blogging, Photos
• Go Daddy Hosting Connection
• $20 Google® AdWords® Credit1
• $25 Microsoft® adCenter Credit†
• FREE! Google Webmaster Tools
Update: Ouch!! I just realised I chose Windows hosting when I actually wanted Linux hosting (as it is more stable). I sent an email to see if GoDaddy can change it.

NO! Godaddy is NOT a good hosting. Not especially if you want to get spammed without any protection at all. They have an issue with their databases that has a vulnerabilities, some of which they have refused to fix.
Use at your own risk is the recommendation I’d use.

2 months trial? what are the allowed bandwidths? you don’t want to have a 2 months trial, but after 15 days of every month, it becomes inaccessible anymore…

@Eddrei
That sounds bad. Anyway, I’d like to see for myself as there’s no harm in trying. I can always keep the domain name and switch back webhosting to Exabytes easily. May I know what sort of spam you are talking about? Email spam? Website comment spam? Thanks for the heads up though..
@BobbyT
Actually not trial as I’ve paid for the full 2 months. 250 Gb monthly transfer. So I guess bandwidth is not an issue. What I’ll be more interested is if they have the same CPU overload problem that seems to plaque my previous Wordpress accounts at Exabytes.

There we go. It’s about two years old and they have long since fixed their reverse proxy which kills Bad Behavior but otherwise, a lot of the complaints stands.
