Microsoft + Yahoo = Microhoo

Ha ha.. that’s what some CNet people like Tom Meritt and Molly Wood had been joking last year when there were rumours that Microsoft wanted to take over Yahoo. It was just rumours. Actually Microsoft has shown interest in acquiring Yahoo since May 2006. However, in the last few days this is no longer a joke as the merging of these two giants may now actually take place.

Microsoft has has just offered a proposition to buy out Yahoo! at $31 a share. That’s a whopping USD $44 billion in total.

Yesterday Yahoo! shares jumped 50%. The joining of these two large company should have Google worried a little bit as there will definitely be some effect in the search engine market. Further down the road I think this will have some indirect effect on us bloggers doing online advertising too.

I like Yahoo! innovations such as Flickr and their buyout of MyBlogLog was a smart decision in my opinion. Microsoft is the old veteran that can still come out with new things like their Live product. Combined, they will be a force to reckon with. On the other hand, Microsoft and Yahoo! have a lot of duplicate competing products such as instant messengers and email. How they will integrate or kept separate from each other will also be crucial if the merger ever takes place.
