Mystery Cheque

I was surprised to get this cheque in the mail.
It couldn’t be from Nuffnang because I just received from them.
It couldn’t be from Google Adsense because I’ve switched to Western Union for faster payment.
It couldn’t be Advertlets (still waiting for it) because the amount was 20x more than what I expected.

A closer look at the envelope and it has the Maybank logo on it.
Let’s take a closer look at the cheque itself.

Wow!! That’s RM 2,000 ! (or USD 602)
Did I just win a lucky draw or something?
I looked closely at the cheque and it looked genuine enough.
So I re-read the contents of the letter that accompanied the cheque.

Ohhh…. it’s just a loan from Maybank. Apparently if you accept their “offer”, you just have to bank in the cheque into your account and that’s it! You got RM 2,000. But it’s not free of course. You have to payback at the rate of RM 333 per month for 6 months. Advantage is that it’s interest free. But don’t forget the RM 77.60 you have to pay for One Time Cash Advance Fee.
That’s the craziest loan promo I’ve ever seen in my life but seeing that it’s all tied to my credit card anyway and I have good credit (so far) I guess it’s a pretty creative way of getting people to take your bank loan.
So what do you think? Should I take the RM 2,000 for some sort of investment on my online activities? Perhaps open more money making blogs or websites ?

My brother got this check too!! Anyway, it seem like Maybank so desperate for you to loan money from them!!! WTF!
Anyway, we try to calculate whether if we take the offer and save the money into Fixed Deposit could make us profit……. no no!! The RM2000 FD in 6 months could make you around RM35-RM38 only, it mean you still need to lost RM40+…. LOL!!!!

it’s normal, maybank is copying the same way other banks such as citibank forcing or baiting pre-approved loans to consumers …
cheers …

Merdurian:
I did not apply for the “loan” at all. Maybank just sent the cheque in.
Anyway this is all new to me.
Amit:
Why ever do you want to interview a problogger wannabe like me? Keyword being WANNABE!
You should be interviewing bigger bloggers like 5xmom.com etc.

I just got one few days ago. I got somewhat bigger amount. So, a quick search to see if anyone else has something similar. And I found your post.
Think it would be quite silly to accept the loan when you don’t really need it.

You should definitely tear it up unless you need the cash. It’s only called “interest free” because they hit you with the interest up front!
