Maxis Broadband - First Looks
I’m the unofficial reporter for chess tournaments in Malaysia. Right now I’m at a major chess tournament between ASEAN youth chess teams. It kills me when I cannot blog about it because of the lack of Internet connection.
I am currently staying at the Concorde Hotel, Shah Alam to provide coverage for the event via the official tournament website. The first day I used the hotel’s internet connection which costs RM 57 for 24 hours. This is very expensive as the online time starts when you first connect and ends exactly 24 hours later regardless of whether you used the internet connection in between or not.
For the second day I had to go to Starbucks across the hotel to update the chess results.
Luckily today, a friend loaned me his Maxis USB modem to use.

Right now I’m in my hotel room blogging about this.

Small isn’t it. I like the compact size and the idea of getting online anywhere. So far, I’ve only used it at the 2nd floor and now in the 6th floor of the hotel. There are feedback that Maxis users have increased dramatically and that the overall speed is starting to slow down. One of my friends initially reported fantastic speeds when Maxis first started with this wireless program but later complained that his speeds was sometimes worse than dial up.
I checked out Speedtest.net to see how fast the connection was. The plan my friend subscribed to is the RM138 per month with a theoretical speed of 3.6 Mbps.
Download speed: 380 Kb/s
Upload speed: 161 kb/s
Not the promised 3.6 Mbps but I’m satisfied as this is more than adequate for most of my online activities. I wish the price for Maxis Broadband was lower though. RM100 perhaps? Or perhaps I should look at the bigger and not so sexy bulky modem option at slower speeds but cheaper RM 68 per month.

RM138 per month is expensive. I doubt that your friend can get full 3.6Mbps all the time right?

de modem is so sleek n convenient but the speed is really too slow it seems! better to enjoy wifi at starbuck or coffeebean for internet!
December 5th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
@Wing Loon - What do we loose if we need to break the contract. I think that should not be more than the initial amount that we invested in purchasing that plus any current outstanding.

Jalaj, yes…you are right,

RM57 for 24 hours is very expensive already! I remember last time i used G Hotel @ Penang’s connection cost around RM20+

Hi all, if not mistaken i remember they got 1 package for maxis users, around RM88 per month, right? They claim that speed can reach 3.6Mbps, but i believe that is maximum speed, my freind get lousy speed in PJ……

@Wing Loon - So I guessed right. I am here at Mumbai(India), looking for a good service, not necessarily broadband, with no fine prints which lets me step back without loosing much.

Actually I find the speed faster than at Starbucks but only at times. It’s like a cellphone. If you are in an area that has poor reception the speed drops to a dead crawl making me want to scream. For example in the hotel, there was a room in the 2nd floor that had terrible connection speed - I had to wait for several minutes before a web page showed up.
I’ll probably think of getting this modem only if the coverage and connection speeds improve.

Anybody try celcom broadband? I heard they offer similar package with maxis wireless broadband, but i dunno which 1 more stable?
January 5th, 2008 at 4:06 am
i live in gombak n i’m using celcom bb now on rm68/month package at 384kbps.the speed was very good n very stable.managed to get the max 384kbps speed.i find it convenient because no activation fee,no 12- or 18-month agreement,n no 3Gb limitation on monthly dloads like maxis.
except the celcom’s modem was so expensive.so i searched n found much much cheaper modem at http://www.3gcard.myceloteh.com where d price’s near half of celcom’s.d modem’s very nice since u can also use it for maxis bb or even digi edge.no need to buy modem from celcom.just subscribe their service n find a cheaper one on ur own.

I am using USB Wireless Broadband for a few months now. The signal is like a yo-yo. Sometimes can reach upto 200kb/s but right now only 30kb/s. Called Maxis support a few times - latest being today who asked me to test the speed on their website which I achieved around 227kbps which the operator said is good enough because according to him 227kbps equals to 200kb/s.
I rest my case. Maxis Broadband support teams are bunch of idiots which cannot even distinguish between kbps [kilobit per second] and kb/s [kilobytes per second]. 300 kbps = 27.71 kb/s, ie a fraction of what I normally enjoy on their USB Broadband.
If it is not because of the advantage of mobile access - I would not have recommended Maxis USB Broadband. The speed is suckz!!! A waste of RM 138/m #$%^%^$%@#

Maxis Broadband really sucks. I’ve been using for 2 months now and each time so slow browsing. I’ve called help-desk so many times and each time the same procedure and no improvement. It’s really a waste of money and time using this Broadband. I’ve sent in an email to them on Sunday to complain but till now no reply from them. You know what, this company is very arrogant and stubborn and don’t care about us customers. They get our contract for 18 months and throw rubbish at us. Think I’m going to complain again and still no reply, then I’m going to go to higher authorities. Maybe we can band together to voice our displeasure and get better treatment. What say you people.

Looks like there’s more negative comments now than ever. Only twosuperheroes had something positive to say about them. Service must have gone downhill since the first time I used it.

A warning from one consumer to another:
DO NOT SIGN UP TO MAXIS BROADBAND!
If you love your kids, don’t let them use Maxis broadband.
Kids who surf slower, learn slower and with the added pressure from having an unstable internet connection and constant disconnection could lead them to having suicidal tendencies at such a young age.
IF YOU LOVE YOUR KIDS, SAY NO TO MAXIS BROADBAND!
