The Tyranny of a Full Time Job
I hate working full time. I just feel it’s not natural for anybody to work 8 hours a day - 5 days a week on something that has nothing relavant to your life except to bring in monthly salary for day to day survival. And of course to bring in lots of profit for the company you are working for.
As a programmer my work time is mainly divided to:
1. Reading emails to find out the task of the day. bugs to fix, queiries from customers etc.
2. Preparing progress reports such as what I’ve done, amount of completion and time spent so that the boss can track what you are doing.
3. Research into solving new coding task or fixing bugs.
4. The actual coding job itself, fixing bugs, etc.
Boring isn’t it?
For example, I had to work on Christmas last year so that the company could look good for some software product launches. Imagine that! Working on Christmas day!
But what to do? It’s currently the only way I know of to make a living. I have no choice but to stick with it for a long time to come unless I find some different income making stream.
Anyway today is a good day. It’s a Saturday. I am not reading a bossy email telling me what to do. I’m blogging. I don’t have to write a single line of code. Or even think about solving problems.
I am just browsing around (an activity frowned at in the office). Looking for ideas to break from the trap of getting stuck in a full time job. Guess I’m not the only one. One of this year’s hottest book is Timothy Ferriss’s 4 hour work week.
No wonder this book is popular. Tim preaches ways of how a 9-5 worker like me can get out of the tyranny of a full time job. Yeah that’s the dream. To blog for money. To sit in your pajammas and work from home. To outsource difficult work and still make a killing in income profits. Well this is not a review as I’ve just came to know about this book. I’d probably buy it if I see it in a local bookstore (no patience to wait for delivery for an online purchase)
Ah that’s the dream.
It’s one of my favourite pastimes, reading money making blogs like 5xmom, JohnChow.com, CashQuests.com and LiewCF.
Anyway, I’m watching some cartoons and DVDs afterwards …
